Why should I be considered for the Education for Children with Diabetes Foundation Scholarship?

I believe that I am an ideal candidate to be considered for the Education for Children with Diabetes Foundation scholarship as I possess the necessary skills, knowledge, experience, and most of all the desire to overcome my disease, which would help me become successful in my future career. Basically, any disease, sickness, or debilitation can be disadvantageous to anyone. In my case, I was diagnosed with type I diabetes when I was a child. However, instead of allowing my condition to bring me down and discourage me, I used it as a springboard to accomplish my goals in life.While many people pitied me and felt sorry for me because of my illness, I did not feel the same way for myself. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, I used my sickness as my motivation and inspiration to prove to everyone that despite my condition, I could do anything I want if I just work hard for it. Initially, it was very difficult to adjust to the effects of type I diabetes as I had to watch the food eat and I had to be constantly injected with insulin.However, as I grew up, I eventually got used to my disease, and as time passed, my condition became a part of my everyday life, which I barely paid any attention to. As I battle with diabetes, I always conditioned my mind and my body to focus on the task at hand, which is to finish high school and move to a higher level of education. Instead of focusing on the negative aspect of my condition, I focused on the positive side of it and as a result, I was able to live a relatively normal life.Basically, even when the complications of my condition were causing me a lot pain, my motto was â€Å"Keep your eyes on the prize,† which exactly what I have been doing all my life. I maintained my focus on the â€Å"prize,† which is to finish school and as a result, I was able to get good grades in my class despite my disease and I was able to reach the senior year of my high school with ease. I was also able to participate in various school activities such as basketball, swimming, and jogging, among others.In addition, my condition was able to instill in me discipline in achieving my goals and aspirations. Although there were a lot of temptations such as smoking and heavy drinking, I was able to resist them as I know it could worsen my illness, one way or the other. In a way, my diabetes was able to shield me from bad influences and prevent me from being distracted from my goal. In other words, I saw my disease as more of an opportunity rather than a disadvantage and as a blessing rather than a curse.I have never felt ashamed of my disease as I know it would make me a better person and teach me a lot lessons in life. My diabetes is basically an opportunity for me to prove to others that I can still live a normal life and still excel in the things I do despite my condition. In addition, it is also an opportunity for me to show to other young people who are afflicted with the disease that their diabetes should never be a hindrance to reaching their dreams.In other words, the disease enabled me to set a good example to other people who have diabetes or other illnesses. Moreover, I saw it as a blessing since now I have a chance to get a scholarship because of my disease and help lessen my parents’ expenses for my education. In addition, the disease made me value my parents more as they were the ones who always cared for me as I battled with diabetes and ensured that I get a good education. In this regard, I believe that my attitude towards my diabetes would greatly help me as I enter college.As I coped with my disease, I have learned a lot of lessons such as commitment, the value of hard work, sacrifice, patience, and humility, which I believe I would be able to apply when I go to college and when I grow up and face the real world. In short, my diabetes as taught me a lot of realities in this world and as a result I have emerged a stronger person who is ready to combat all the difficulties an d obstacles I would be facing in real life. However, what sets me apart from the other applicants is my passion to become better every day even if I have a disease.Ever since I discovered that I have type I diabetes, I have dedicated myself to becoming better each day while making sure that I watch my health. In addition, I have also shown great enthusiasm in knowing more about my disease through reading and researching as I know this would help me prevent complications as I grow up. If I am blessed and fortunate enough to be given the Education for Children with Diabetes Foundation Scholarship, I will work hard so that I would achieve my dreams of becoming highly skilled and highly competent in my profession and prove to everyone that I am worthy of the scholarship.In addition, if I am admitted to the scholarship program, I would also encourage people diagnosed with the disease to never lose hope and keep moving forward to reach their goals. In short, my attitude towards my disease , my dedication to my goals, and, more importantly my passion and desire to accomplish my dreams despite my disease, makes me more than qualified to be given the Education for Children with Diabetes Foundation Scholarship.

Chilean Mining Accident Essay

Donald Marrin 4/8/12 Brittney Preece â€Å"On Aug. 5, 2010, a gold and copper mine near the northern city of Copiapo, Chile caved in, trapping 33 miners in a chamber about 2,300 feet below the surface. For 17 days, there was no word on their fate. As the days passed, Chileans grew increasingly skeptical that any of the miners had survived — let alone all of them. But when a small bore hole reached the miners’ refuge, they sent up a message telling rescuers they were still alive. † (Chile Mining Accident (2010), New York Times) Anytime a communication is given you need to consider how much information needs to be told and the exact information so you can keep it consistent. In a time of crisis consistency is a must to make sure you appear to be doing everything you can. Any time it is a dangerous situation you always want to be open for communication and until you know definite that any of the miners involved are injured or worse you always want to be optimistic. If you tell them the outcome is grim then you may cause panic and uproar when in reality the outcome could be completely different. The most important thing the company needs to keep in mind was the needs of the families of the miners involved and the needs of the employees. Each communication would need to be geared to make sure they know that the mine is doing everything it can to ensure safety of the trapped miners and take extra steps to ensure the safety of the other employees. The message geared to the families regarding the trapped miners would need to be reassuring and let them know that all possible resources are being used to get the miners out as soon as possible to ensure the safety and well being of their loved ones. Like i said earlier, communication would be key in this time. Anything you may think is small the families would want to know all information before they happen to hear it on the news or read it in an article. I also would want to know that until the miners were recovered and ready to return to work that the company would help by financially supporting the families which would reduce the amount of stress on the affected miners and possible offer a quicker recovery. The employees would want to know that safety would be the companys number one priority from then on out to help prevent a tragedy of this magnitude from happening again in the future. Also as an employee, seeing fellow coworkers trapped and in need i would want to pitch in and help. So i believe that other mining should cease until the miners are saved. This would show that the company cares about the workers and not just out for the profits and make the workers just a number. Draft 1: To Families I believe the best way to communicate with the loved ones of the miners would be face to face, possible in a conference room with all the families and the management of the mine. Families and loved ones we have called you hear today to inform you that one of our mines has suffered and cave in and 33 of our miners are currently trapped 300 meters below ground. However, rescuers are drilling holes in an attempt to locate the workers as quickly as possible. Every resource we have is being called in to help the trapped miners. Any information that we learn, the families and loved ones will be the first to know. At this time we are optimistic that the miners are still alive and will be rescued as soon as possible. Any questions or concerns can be directly communicated with one of the management members who will be available to help the families. Draft 2: To the employees In a situation of this magnitude fact to face communication is always best but to quickly get the message to all members of the workforce a memo or newsletter would be effective. Today a horrible incident has happened involving a collapsed mine trapping 33 of our fellow coworkers. All resources are being used to quickly and efficiently rescue the miners. Safety is our number one priority and all safety regulations and safety checks will be implemented to ensure the safety of our employees. We want to prevent anything of this caliber happening in the future. Our employees are our future so we want to keep you safe while at work. We will have counselors on site to help anyone who needs to cope with the situation. At this time we are optimistic the miners will be safely rescued.

Axeman of New Orleans

What brought the city to their attention was the first crime made on May 23, 1918 when an Italian grocer, Joseph Maggio and his wife were butchered in their apartment during the night above the Maggio grocery store (Taylor). In the crime scene was the weapon, an axe, which seemed to have had been covered in blood. As police dug into the case, several suspects were questioned, but investigators seemed to be lacking evidence and the only clear clue seemed to be a message written in chalk near the home reading; â€Å"Mrs. Joseph Maggio will sit up tonight. Just write Mrs. Toney† (Taylor). Looking back into files, what seemed to appear was a case similar to the Maggio’s. Standing out was the use of an axe to chisel out an access way into the victim’s homes. More importantly in 1911 there were three other murders targeted towards Italian grocers (â€Å"Axeman†). There had to have been some kind of pattern forming. One month after the Maggio crimes came another scene of Louis Bossumer and Annie Harriet Lowe. Annie, discovered by neighbors lying in her own blood, claimed that her common law husband Mr. Bossumer attacked her. He lived behind his grocery store, but notice he was not Italian and survived, with a fractured skull (Smith). Popping out in the scene was again the access of the killer. In the house of Mr. Bossumer nothing was stolen, but the kitchen door was chiseled and lying on steps. After hospital treatment they were both released and with no charges pressed against them. Knowing that the â€Å"boogeyman† was still out there, New Orleans was preparing for another unplanned attack, and sure enough it took place a couple months later in August. Attacked, but not killed, was Mrs. Edward Schneider: she was found unconscious, with many gashes, and a few teeth missing from a fall of the axe. Seeing a small phantom-like form standing over her bed, she had awakened. No evidence was gathered, as with the murder of Joseph Romano who was an Italian grocer and was attacked just like others (â€Å"Axeman†). Police were never able to pick up any evidence of the identity of the Axeman. Now chaos was pouring through the city as families went into search groups and protected their families with shotguns. The month of August continued with exciting events, as the killer was spotted on August 11 attacking people in the streets, as rumors said (Taylor). Manhunts were created but nothing helped and even on August 21 a suspicious man was found leaping a fence but once again nothing was concluded. On August 11, a man named Al Durand found an axe and an attempt to chisel through his rear door, but apparently the door seemed to be too thick to cut through. Three more pieces of evidence appeared in three different ways. The rear door of Paul Lobella’s grocery and house was chiseled through while no one was home and with in the same day grocer Joseph Le Bouef reported an attempt to chisel through his rear door in the night. The last of the three pieces of evidence followed the next day when A. Recknagle, a grocer, found chisel marks on his back door also. Leaving the month of August and moving towards September 15 and past the disappearance of the Axemen for a while, were noticed more attempts of cutting through the door of Paul Durel’s house (Smith). Notice how these attempts all happened to grocers. Leaving the police questioning, the Axeman left the city for a while and no further crimes were reported until the year 1919. The day came in 1919 when the killer’s worst crime occurred. On March 10, across the river from New Orleans, Mrs. Charles Cortimiglia, a grocer’s wife, repeatedly denied the gruesome attack of her husband by a large man in dark clothing with an axe. The husband died and fell to the floor, and the wife was next on the list with her baby. While she asked and begged for mercy, the Axeman came down with the deadly weapon and killing the infant and leaving the mother with a fractured skull (Taylor). Notice the man who died was a grocer, maybe not Italian but the fact still connects with the other murders. Giving up, the police began thinking the impossible and saying that the Axeman really was not a man, but possibly a midget, with a better chance of falling through the cuttings of the doors. The police had to keep in mind what the victims saw, a â€Å"large man in a black suit. † Grasping for hope, the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper received an unexpected letter from the unknown Axeman, which was a huge piece of evidence. Summing up what the letter read, the Axeman declared he was invisible and no one would ever catch him. He alone knew who the victims were and he would leave no evidence except his bloody axe that would send people below to keep him company. He declared the police were stupid, but then again stated they were wise and knew how to keep him away from all harm. He said he is the worst murderer ever, but he could be much worse. Then what surprises them all is he blatantly says at 12:15 on next Tuesday night, he is going to pass over New Orleans and in his infinite mercy he is going to make a little proposition to the people, and here it is: â€Å"I am very fond of jazz music and I swear by all devils in the nether regions that every person shall be spared in whose home a jazz band is in full swing at the time I have just mentioned. If everyone has a jazz band going, well, then, so much the better for you people. People who do not jazz it up on Tuesday night will get the axe. † He leaves the letter signed as The Axeman (Wright). The people of New Orleans tried their best to follow what was asked but could not manage to arrive at peace with the Axeman. The people jammed with revelers, friends and family gathered to sing, and they did their best to â€Å"jazz it up,† which was suggested. The axe attack of Sarah Laumann made the people return home into safe hiding. What was different about this crime scene and what separated it out from others, was the fact of how the killer got in. He did not do his normal routine; instead he attempted to go through the window (Taylor). Riot in the city was now beginning to occur because Sarah was not a grocer or an Italian, leaving the gates open for everyone to be attacked, throwing the police off kilter. However, the next crime put them back on track. Another survivor, Steve Boca, trembled to walk with axe wounds. He managed to make it to his friend’s house who called for help, and did his best to help treat the wounds. Police found the normal signs of the Axeman, the chiseled door and bloody axe on the floor. Nearly a year later on September 2, a local man fired his gun at an attacker who broke into his house, but of course he escaped. Making his last impression on everybody, The Axeman had one more victim on his list to keep him company. Mike Pepitone was butchered as a grocer, in his bed at night. The room next to his, holding his six children and wife, was not touched. Noticing the relationship between the first and last murder, both were butchered and grocers. His coming and going was done and New Orleans, still frightened, in their shoes slowly started to calm down. Even though the police still have this case labeled as unsolved, the reason may as well be because that generation has all passed and they are now dealing with today’s issues and keeping everyone else safe. Just because the police have not come to a conclusion does not mean other people do not have one. A possible conclusion came to mind, that the guilty party is Joseph Mumfre. Though he is not referenced in the evidence, Esther Albano, who was the widow of the Axeman’s latest victim, later killed him. As the investigation was being made, certain things about Mumfre stood out, to making him the possible murder Mumfre was once the leader in a jazz band, which was one of the Axeman’s suggestions to keep him away. Another aspect of the band was they seemed to have preyed on the Italians, and half of the Axeman’s murders were Italian (Taylor). This unsolved case soon became old news and people moved on and unpleasantly found peace with the Axeman, who disappeared to the coast.

It ignores actions that appear to be wrong in themselves; it espouses the concept that the end justifies the means; the principles may come into conflict with that of justice seems to associate justice with ef ficiency rather than fair play); and it is extremely difficult to formulate and establish satisfactory rules of application (Bentham 2000). I would pull the lever because it is ethical to save lives of people and choose the decision which benefits the majority. Utilitarianism manifests itself in two major forms. The stronger of the two is so-called act-utilitarianism. Under this system, the moral agent considers the consequences of only the action under consideration. The second system is called rule-utilitarianism. Here the moral agent considers a set of rules by which life should be lived. The basis of accepting or rejecting a rule is whether the consequences of everyone following the rule will result in the maximum probable good consequences. Rule-utilitarianism may be regarded as a weaker form of utilitarianism than act-utilitarianism. A rule-utilitarian, when confronted with a situation in which he believes that abiding by the rule will not in the present case be most beneficial, will simply modify the rule. Great disagreement may be generated over which consequences are in fact "good," which consequences should rec eive greater or lesser weight, and what probability should be assigned to different future consequences. Modern critics of utilitarianism also note that ultimately utilitarianism must seek non-utilitarian answers on assigning boundaries and values around the measurement of activities and values associated with the calculation of utilitarian systems. All these matters serve to cause what appears to be an exceptionally practical system to become less and less practical (Donaldson et al. 2002). One character trait that also helps me manage the competition is being a risk taker. As a risk taker, I can take advantage of different opportunities in life without fearing the possible losses. This way I can come up with quality features that can be used in building my business. Daoism and Confucianism Essay Daoism and Confucianism are two of China’s oldest and most pervasive philosophies. They arose during the same period in Chinese history, called the Hundred Schools of Thought, a time often marred by unrest and feudal strife. Both philosophies reflect this, as their overarching goals are to seek order and harmony in one’s life, relationship with society, and the universe. Confucianism is a philosophy originated by the Chinese philosopher, Confucius, which teaches that logic and reason can solve all human problems, and rejects excessive emotion and superstition. Confucianism also teaches that following the traditions of early Chinese culture is the best way to organize society. Traditional ritual, music and poetry are also seen as important tools in maintaining societal harmony. Confucius was concerned with matters of human relationships. His philosophy inspires scholars to take up civil service with the goal of building a society based upon their discernment of good and bad and to desire that which is judged to be good. The way of Confucius is to forge a moral society protected from the world. The main source of Confucian teaching is the Analects of Confucius. Daoism on the other hand was started by Lao Tzu, and is mainly concerned with living a balanced life based on following Nature. Lau Tzu saw the natural world as a sort of teacher which could impart wisdom to mankind if we only observed it and modeled our lives on what we see in nature. Extremes are to be avoided, passivity is encouraged over force, going with the flow of things and avoiding conflict is the goal. Lao Tzu rejects worldly concerns, limited knowledge and flawed judgments as creating an imbalance in the nature of things. The way of Lao Tzu is to allow man and nature to come into a harmonic coexistence. So, to boil it all down to one point, Taoism is all about mans relationship with nature, while Confucianism is about mans relationship with his fellow man. Confucianism was created in the early fourth century B. C. E. The founder of Confucianism was Kong Qiu (Kung Chiu), who was born around 552 B. C. E. in the small state of Lu and died in 479 B. C. E. The Latinized name Confucius, based on the honorific title Kong Fuzi (Kung Fu-tzu), was created by 16th-century Jesuit missionaries in China. Confucius was a teacher to sons of the nobility at a time when formal education was just beginning in China. He traveled from region to region with a small group of disciples, and believed that his philosophy could transform individuals and society into a more harmonious unit. Confucius was not particularly famous during his lifetime, and even considered himself to be a failure. He longed to be the advisor to a powerful ruler, and he believed that such a ruler, with the right advice, could bring about an ideal world. Confucius said heaven and the afterlife were beyond human capacity to understand, and one should therefore concentrate instead on doing the right thing in this life. Thus even without deities and a vision of salvation, Confucianism plays much the same role as religion does in other cultural contexts. Confucianism is a socio-philosophical system aimed at bettering individuals and society. Its primary goals were to educate people to be self-motivated and self-controlled, and to enable people to assume their responsibilities, which would, in turn, cultivate a better self and a harmonious society. Confucius believed that lawlessness and social problems stemmed from the combination of unenlightened individuals and a social structure without norms. Together, Yin and Yang are seen as complementary symbols of the energy and tension in a system of counter forces. Tao, or the Great Ultimate, is the first-cause of the universe, a force that flows through all life, but is not a personal being. Ultimately, we are here to discover our real self, which is the nature of Tao. Humans are thought to be inherently good. Through self-discipline, a human is able to move in accordance to Tao and thus will enjoy the principle of change. In a practical sense, we are here to better ourselves and society. This is done through education and enlightenment. Daoism was created in China in the Late 4th century B. C. E. Daoism was founded by Li Erh (better known as Lao Tzu), or â€Å"Old Master†, in the sixth century B. C. E. Lao Tzu was the keeper of the imperial library and the author of Tao Te Ching, or the Book of Dao and Virtue. The specific date of birth of Lao Tzu is unknown. Legends vary, but scholars’ place his birth between 600 and 300 B. C. E. Lao Tzu’s wise counsel attracted followers, but he refused to set his ideas down in writing. He believed that written words might solidify into formal dogma. Lao Tzu wanted his philosophy to remain a natural way to live life with goodness, serenity and respect. Lao Tzu laid down no rigid code of behavior. He believed a person’s conduct should be governed by instinct and conscience. Lao Tzu believed that human life, like everything else in the universe, is constantly influenced by outside forces. He believed â€Å"simplicity† to be the key to truth and freedom. The result was the eighty-one sayings of the â€Å"Tao Te Ching. † The Tao Te Ching was written in China roughly 2,500 years ago at about the same time when Buddha expounded the Dharma in India and Pythagoras taught in Greece. The Tao Te Ching is probably the most influential Chinese book of all times. Its 81 chapters have been translated into English more times than any other Chinese document, and it provides the basis for the philosophical school of Daoism, which is an important pillar of Chinese thought. In Tao Te Ching, it never specifically defines The Way. It’s a series of verses, poems, and riddles. It emphasizes control but not dominance, fluidity but not ambivalence, and mystery but not confusion. Dao is analogous to God, but Dao is not a being. Rather, Dao is the source of all and the ultimate reality, and Dao is the cause of all change in life. Dao permeates the universe and is the principle behind all that is. Dao can only be experienced through mystical ecstasy. Daoists seek transformation of their self and body into a cosmic, Dao-focused entity. This is achieved through ritual and meditation. Daoism teaches that there is one undivided truth at the root of all things. Daoism is the organized, indigenous religion of China. From a philosophical standpoint Daoism focuses on Dao, or way, and deals with ideas about naturalness, ease, non-action etc. Physically, Daoism focuses on health through concepts like Qigong and Taiji quan, which involve deep breathing, slow, graceful motions and gentle stretching. From a religious standpoint, Daoism is reflected in many areas, including a social and political vision, rituals, a hierarchical priesthood, talismans and exorcisms. Other Daoism practices include advanced spiritual meditation and mystic, ecstatic soul travel. The universe is hierarchically organized in such a way that its entirety is reproduced in its individual parts. Thus, man is a microcosm within the macrocosm (small universe within a larger one). Man’s parts correspond to parts of the universe and nature. All is from the Dao, and all will return to the Dao. Daoism was created to reunite with Dao through the transformation from disharmony to harmony. Disharmony causes a destructive or waning cycle of the Five Elements (metal, wood, earth, water and fire). This cycle consists of metal destroying wood (wood is cut by a metal ax); wood dominating earth through its roots (domination through power); earth mastering water and preventing floods (anti-nature forces); water destroying fire (pollution is caused by anti-nature, and destroys the beauty of the world); fire melts metal (causing pollution). Through personal and social transformation, humans can convert the destructive cycle of the Five Elements into a creative or constructive cycle of the Five Elements. Metal in the earth nourishes underground water (purification); water is the source of life for vegetation, including wood (nourishment); wood is the fuel for fire, which causes ashes, which then form earth (natural recycling). The formation of metal in earth completes the cycle. Daoism has a very recognizable symbol. It is the Yin-Yang, a circle divided in two equal parts of dark/black (Yin) and light/white (Yang). Within the dark, there is a circle of light, and within the light, there is a circle of dark. The two parts are equal because they signify the balance in the world caused by the Yin and Yang forces in all things. Each has a circle of the other to symbolize that each contains elements of the other, and that each cannot exist without the other. Sometimes, the Yin-Yang symbol will be surrounded with trigrams, or sets of three lines with breaks in various positions. Each trigram stands for a certain principle in Daoism.

ANALYSIS OF AGAMEMNON BY AESCHYLUS The themes in this play are centered on the argument which stipulates human minds in very violent and problematic aspects due the following; the lust for power and the violent acts associated with it, the chauvinistic clash male against female dominance, crime and its penalty, sensation versus motive; tribal alienation versus democratic idealism; contamination and purification. These have been emphasized because of their prevalence in the family set-up. The center point is Apollo puts a curse on prophetess Cassandra for refusing to give her a hand in marriage, she willingly accepts the responsibility for the outcomes of Apollos curse (Fagles, 2010). Prophetess Cassandra had entered into an agreement that required him to give her gift to prophesize in return for her; however after getting the power to prophesize she did fulfill her promise which prompts Apollo to punish her. This is enough evidence of arrogance defiance to a god by women. Historically, there are political issues that involve leaders, wars, and maintenance of law and order. The Furies plays the judicial role by punishing those involved in terrible crimes through tormenting them by irreversible curses. In this case a person is not punished by human laws, the gods do the task. Through the Chorus the Greek soldiers are warned of the possible punishment for being too much violent on Troy because that shows lawlessness. Apollo with his powers can not save the prophetess Cassandra from the eminent murder threat from Clytaemnestra, therefore she is very upset. She was cursed to see future events but she can not have control over them. The power of the gods is evident when Agamemnon and prophetess Cassandra are pronounced to death but no human powers are able to change. Clytaemnestra torments Agamemnon by cleverly convincing him to walk across the red carpet an act which is signifies his demand for recognition of the role she played in the Greek victory. As with Cassandra, Clytaemnestra believes in the ideas that justice is best achieved through revenge An eye for an eye, she believes that more murder can be a possible cleansing for the sins caused by the earlier murders (Wilson, 2010). Politically The play fits into its time politically by carefully a portraying a pattern in change where that it is still possible for the less powerful class of the society to continue to play their normal roles in the society. Furies are therefore helping maintain the cosmic order by enforcing laws that the father of gods and men administer hence they are not viewed as being anarchic and primitive spirits of violence. They are therefore feared and honored just as Artemis because they are concerned with justice in the society. The play also fits into its time politically as it was written a time when tragedy was an order of the day in ancient Greeks politics especially when it was under tyrant Pisistratus hence playwright had to restructure their contents to portray the state of the politics of the time. In Oresteia drama therefore was used to magnify political issues of the time by embedding to the tradition of the Athenians. The habit of arrogance is termed as a crime that has the consequences of a heavy punishment. The old men had a tough warning that being excessive and full of pride. She performs different tasks that women were not supposed to do, for instance she is a murderer and his mannerisms were weird because he could talk back them, she even goes to the extent of admiring to be the ruler of Argos (Slayford-Wei, 2010). However she did every thing what was not supposed to be done by other women, she was a murder, she was talking back to men and she wanted to rule Argos which all this were meant only to be done by men. From the Mens Chorus Helen and Clytaemnestra are depicted as creatures that are extremely evil because they bring destruction and wreck to the ways of men. The belief by Cassandra is that women should have respect for their husbands and always try being good wives. She doesnt believe that Clytaemnestra has the right to brutally murder her husband, although Clytaemnestra is angry because of the death of Iphigenia. Cassandra is so disgusted that she compares Clytaemnestra to a very hideous animal. The Chorus of old men clearly ignores her warnings but she is confident of what will happen she therefore chooses to remain calm with a passive acceptance of her death. The Chorus of men is in disbelief of the fact that a woman like Clytaemnestra could actually dare to perform such an act of murder because of her woman wood. Clytaemnestra dares them by proving her animosity as she proudly explains to them how she performed this violent act with her own bloody hands. In their response, they say that she will be crushed to death by the bitter feeling of men, this is partly due to the fact that the deadly crime was committed by a mere creature which is a woman. Spiritually The author argues that there is a thin line between humans and beast and thus allows human to transform to beasts to try and show that the people that leaved at that time were as in human as beast would be fro instance the wife of the king who eagerly anticipate to the return of his husband so that he would murder him and continue ruling (Wilson, 2010). This is further clarified when she finally hideously murders his husband upon his return from Troy. Athenians at the time of Agamemnon showed little or no loyalty to their women and mostly never involved them in the making of family decisions. They are not ready to pass the blame to the man who kidnapped her simply because he is a man and she has to take the blame because she is a woman. More so the king Agamemnon blames Helen for all the deaths that resulted from the etojan war. The Chorus shows high respect for the gods by fearing beings such as the goddess Artemis. The gods as are very powerful, Goddess Artemis at one point demands for Agamemnon to make his daughter a sacrifice in order for the Greek ships to sail to Troy. The old men make their appeal for help from Zeus (gods king) and Artemis brother Apollo. Towards the end of the story, there is role reversing between men and women, Clytaemnestra, remains as the only woman in charge; she bosses to Aegisthus and the Chorus as the only male characters around her, these two characters acts like women despite the fact that they represent men (Slayford-Wei, (2010). The chorus of men was initially disrespective to her; Clytaemnestra can now belittle all male characters. Therefore, the Greek society questions the reversal of roles and its effects to the mens position. Clytaemnestra behavior is typically that of a man, this upsets the Chorus of Elders. By doing everything in a manly manner she believes that she has finally delivered justice to Argos, she manages to end the curse of bloodshed that had been in force for several years. In the chorus I swept from these halls/the murder, it is enough evidence for her belief, According to her, the murders of Agamemnon and Cassandra marks the erasure of previous generations bloodshed.

How successful is Dickens in his presentation of female characters? There are many female characters in Great Expectations, but most of them are quite incidental and of no great significance to the plot. Some of them however are essential to the story and play a large part in the plot. Miss Havisham, combined with Estella are the people who are the ‘snobby’ influence in Pips life, they seem to become desirable characters to Pip after he meets them for the first time at Satis house. Their values do battle with his own at the end of chapter 9; the values that Miss Havisham and Estella have introduced to him, and Joe's humanistic values that he has grown up with. Questions have been raised over whether Miss Havisham and Estellas are believable as actual characters. Miss Havisham can be described as over-dramatised as a decaying part of a decaying house where time has been suspended. She is calculated and spiteful almost to unrealistic odds. There is also a hint of witchery in her character, evident in chapter 29 where she tells Pip to love Estella; â€Å" ‘If she tears your heart to pieces - and as it gets older and stronger, it will tear deeper - love her, love her, love her!’................it could not have sounded from her lips more like a curse.† This passage, where Miss Havisham is charged with almost a sexual ene rgy, is quite frightening to the young Pip. She has created Estellas to wreak her own revenge on men, and is successful in this, but in the process becomes devoted to Estella herself, and then feels pain when Estella cannot return her feelings as she has been rendered ‘heartless’ by Miss Havisham's upbringing. The fact that she shows remorse at the end of the book gives her character an added depth, and therefore most people feel she becomes more realistic. She is a victim of her own creation, and a figure of pity. We first meet Estellas as a quite nasty child, very aware of how her class makes her ‘better’ than most people. She enjoys Pips pain and humiliation when he visits Satis house, and enjoys putting him down due to his â€Å"labourers hands† and â€Å"coarse boots†. In the true style of a young lady of her class of the time she is sent abroad to a ‘finishing’ school, and returns to her dà ©butante in London, once again meeting Pip.

  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Hero’s Journey is never an easy one. This particular journey, as detailed in Homer’s The Odyssey, is one of struggle, loss, heartache, pain, growth and triumph. It is comprised of many steps that Odysseus has to overcome and battle through in order to achieve his final goal of reaching his home and his loved ones. From the Call to Adventure to the Freedom or Gift of living, Odysseus conquered them all. The story begins in the middle of the story, as many of the oral Greek traditions did, with the Journey of Telemachus to find his father. Although Telemachus has not yet met his father, it is almost as if they are journeying together, where the end of both of their journeys results in being reunited. Telemachus journeys from being a boy to becoming a man, while out in the sea Odysseus is battling Poseidon to return to the home that wife that he loves and the home he has left behind.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The first step in any hero’s journey is the Call to Adventure, or the seperation from the pack. For Odysseus this call happened while he was on Calypso’s Island. Up on Olympus Athena had convinced Zeus of her case and Hermes was dispatched to free Odysseus from Calypso’s grasp. Odysseus was settled here for quite some time and had no way of escape until Calypso was forced by the gods to let him go. This is where his journey begins. At first Odysseus is very skeptical of this freedom and thinks that it is a trick by Calypso, which is the denial stage that follows the call to adventure. This stage seperates Odysseus once agaian from what has become familiar to him. He is called to journey alone once again to gain what it is that he has wanted for so long. For Telemachus his call came due to the perils he was facing in his own home with suitors competing for his mother’s love.
